Avian influenza is a highly infectious notifiable disease affecting many species of birds, including commercial, wild and pet birds. See the latest situation page for information on the situation in Suffolk.

According to Dr. Hon Ip, director of the United States Geological Survey's Diagnostic Virology Laboratory at the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin:
Birds such as sparrows and pigeons tend not to be as readily infected. It is not clear why shorebirds are more susceptible to avian influenza infections and simple access to water is not the answer, as even when birds are exposed directly to the virus, species such as pigeons are more resistant.

Police swoop on pigeon fanciers |

Belgian police have swooped on the homes of pigeon fanciers, seizing large quantities of suspected performance-enhancing drugs.
Belgium is regarded as the home of pigeon racing, with 60,000 pigeon fanciers in a nation of 10 million.
Police raided 80 homes of breeders and feed and medicine suppliers throughout Belgium.

A homing pigeon ended up in New York after getting lost during a race and landing on the QE2 cruise liner.
The bird should have flown to his loft in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, after being released near Plymouth.
But instead it headed about 700 miles west before fluttering to a stop on board the luxury passenger ship in the English Channel as it sailed toward the United States.
